Board member since 2024

Peter Lau is passionate about the intersections of art, architecture, craft, community, and the environment. His journey began during architecture school, where he was the principal assistant for the Mountain Lake Workshop, a community-based artist workshop. There, he helped create meaningful experiences for volunteers and collaborated with renowned artists such as composer John Cage and folk artist Howard Finster.

Peter later spent seven years in Kyoto, fully immersed in Japan’s rich cultural traditions. During this time, he taught conversational English in public middle schools, apprenticed with a temple carpenter, and studied under a Japanese architect specializing in reuse, repurposing, and revitalization projects. After relocating to San Francisco, Peter worked in construction and development before moving his family abroad to India and Qatar. In Qatar, he played a pivotal role in a $6 billion urban regeneration project, overseeing, among other aspects, the design and implementation of a public art program that integrated local culture and global artistic visions. Returning to San Francisco in 2018, Peter became a partner at FMA Builders, a premier custom home builder. He is committed to community initiatives, serving on the board of Creativity Explored, leading volunteer tree-planting efforts with Friends of the Urban Forest, and contributing to the SFMOMA Architecture + Design Accessions Committee.
