This fall, Selene Perez’s swans found a home on MAC’s signature tote bag.
Each season, MAC - Modern Appealing Clothing offers a beautiful high-quality tote bag for their customers featuring work by an artist they admire. This fall, MAC featured one of Selene Perez’s signature black swans on their classic canvas bag.
Selene Perez is known for her vast bestiary of strong, graphic drawings of animals and emotive portraits. Ranging from seven-legged cats to flocks of geese in flight, Perez makes her creatures with the simplest of marks across an array of media. Collectors can’t get enough of Perez’s ink blot swans and her portraits of Frida Kahlo, one of Perez’s favorite artists.
The vivid contrast between dark and light, and fine line and densely black form, are skillfully balanced in this particular artwork. Perez handles her subjects with a sense of whimsy that softens the graphic and often stark black-and-white subjects.
Perez's imaginative creatures came to life in her gull pillow made in collaboration with CB2 in 2014. In 2013, her work was featured in Outside In: The Art of Inclusion at the Crawford Art Gallery, in Cork, Ireland. Perez’s work continues to be popular at the Outsider Art Fair in New York.

Chris and Ben Ospital, the founders of MAC along with their late mother Jeri Ospital, have been long-time supporters of Creativity Explored, and the arts community of the Bay Area. They have supported the California College of the Arts fashion department, as well as arts organizations like Headlands Center for the Arts and Creative Growth. Visiting their Hayes Valley store, which features designers like Dries Van Noten and COMME des GARÇONS, feels like walking into an art gallery. Art from Creativity Explored and Creative Growth artists deck the walls, creating an inspiring place to buy inspiring clothes. Before collaborating with Creativity Explored and Perez, MAC had already acquired three of her inkblot swans, which are now prominently displayed inside this one-of-a-kind boutique.
