With the varying needs of our CE artist community, safe navigation around the city is an extremely important topic. Transportation is also a popular subject among CE artists, as many incorporate bicycles, buses, trains, and cars in their work. On March 17th, SFMTA’s Vision Zero Safety - It’s Your Turn Campaign! engaged with CE artists as a part of their citywide education efforts focused on left turn safety.

In busy cities like SF, left turns can be a real challenge. They can also be dangerous - 40% of SF traffic fatalities in 2019 involved drivers making left turns who didn’t see the person in the crosswalk until it was too late. Additionally, research suggests that pedestrians with disabilities and wheelchair users are at a higher risk of becoming injured than the rest of the population. That’s why we were eager for the opportunity to team up with SFMTA’s Vision Zero team to chat about ways to keep our community safe.

The Safety - It’s Your Turn Campaign! joined our weekly virtual ‘All Artist Meeting’ to discuss safety at crosswalks where drivers may be making left turns. Following the discussion, CE artists created and shared some artwork incorporating cars, streets, and pedestrians.

We encourage everyone to learn more about practices that help keep San Francisco safe for all those who walk, bike, drive, and move around the city by visiting www.saferleftturns.org

Special thanks to our guests from SFMTA for including CE artists with disabilities in your education campaign!
