Camille Holvoet shares her experiences through her text-based artwork at Palo Alto Art Center
We are excited to be participating in The Art of Disability Culture: Artists with disabilities dispelling myths, dissolving barriers, and disrupting prejudice. The group show is a robust celebration of the diverse, personal, and infinitely varied “disability experience.” Camille Holvoet joins 21 other disabled artists in celebrating disability pride and challenging prejudice and bias, sharing their own experiences and the complexity of their disability identity.
Far from presenting a single monolithic point of view, the exhibition aims to provide a deep and arresting experience that may leave visitors with more questions than they had going in but will hopefully come away knowing that artists can be disabled in a myriad of ways and still make fascinating, beautiful, and meaningful work.
The exhibition also provides a safe space to come together and reflect upon the pandemic with a greater understanding of how disability culture can strengthen our communities through the practices of interdependence, accessibility, and inclusion.
The work is presented with disability pride and with access needs in mind. All events will have ASL interpretation and live-captioning, and be scent-free. Each piece will have Braille labels and audio descriptions recorded by the artists themselves, as well as docent/guides on Saturdays to help visitors navigate the spaces and provide a more personal introduction to the exhibition.
