Sculptures by Elana Cooper and Kevin Roach celebrate the seasons in downtown San Francisco

Large-scale sculptural works by CE artists Elana Cooper and Kevin Roach are on display in a window installation at 901 Market Street near 5th and Market Streets in San Francisco.

The display, on view to the public 24/7, is part of Hudson Pacific Properties’ Art Windows program. The program features installations by local artists in window displays in the busy shopping corridor. Elana Cooper's I Love Flowers and Kevin Roach's Eyes were selected to reflect the changing seasons of summer into fall.

The sculptures were created with artist Ana Teresa Fernández for OF HERE FROM THERE | DE AQUI DESDE ALLÁ, an immersive installation project featuring the work of dozens of CE artists funded in part by The Kenneth Rainin Foundation. Attendees of the exhibition reception in March 2020, held at San Francisco Art Institute (SFAI) in Fort Mason, were able to see the works in action. Although the exhibition was never opened to the public due to COVID lockdowns, the project was reimagined as a virtual installation in collaboration with The Grey Area in 2021. You can view the digital installation, which features original audio from the in-person reception and performance, on the virtual New Art City platform here.

CE is excited to share Elana Cooper's I Love Flowers and Kevin Roach's Eyes in this new public display as part of our Professional Art Services program. The sculptures, originally white, once served as canvases for projected animation and time-lapse videos for the SFAI installation – but the street-facing space, at only 36 inches deep, called for some adjustments. The surfaces of Cooper’s flowers were painted bright colors (CE's brand colors!) to stand out against the background walls, and reflect the artist's popular flower silhouette paintings. While Cooper’s floral silhouettes are typically created on paper with a brush, these sculptures transform her flowers into a fantastical monument.

Kevin Roach's eye amulet sculptures watch over the garden of Elana’s flowers, mimicking sunshine and clouds. Eye motifs appear frequently in Roach’s drawings – a reflection of his thoughts and concerns about vision loss and other ocular issues. As large sculptures, his eyeballs take flight like mystical birds watching over the colorful terrain.

For more than two years, these works have remained in storage. The 901 Market Street Art Windows offer a unique, community-focused venue, providing Elana Cooper and Kevin Roach an opportunity to showcase works that could not be exhibited within the confines of CE’s own gallery. We’re thrilled to bring these popular designs to a wider audience.

Shoppers walk past the Holiday Art Shop in the Ferry Building in December 2021.

CE is proud to continue our partnership Hudson Pacific Properties. In addition to installing artwork at the 901 Market Street Art Windows, CE hosted a holiday pop-up shop in the Ferry Building (owned by Hudson Properties) in 2021. We are looking forward to continuing the tradition for this 2022 holiday season! At the Ferry Building, work by CE artist Isaac Haney-Owens is permanently featured by Recchiuti Confections, both in their storefront and on their popular SF Icons Burnt Caramel Truffles.

Thousands of people walk by the 901 Market Street Art Windows every day, bringing new visibility to Cooper and Roach's iconic motifs reimagined in 3-D and providing the artists with an accessible venue to showcase their striking designs. Be sure to check out the display when you are downtown and tag @creativityexplored in your Instagram selfies to send your support to Elana and Kevin.
