Common Rhythm ODC Theater

  • ODC Theater 3153 17th Street San Francisco, CA, 94110 United States (map)

Untitled by Monic Morris, oil pastels on paper

Common Rhythm unites the work of Monic Morris and Joseph Omolayole’s to celebrate the role of movement in the creative process. Whether it be on paper or on the stage, movement can help us transcend infinite limitations and create a space for connection with others. Through movement, we can surpass language barriers, release tensed-up anxieties, and authentically convey what we can’t quite accurately put into words. Through these physical expressions, we find common ground– building community and bringing us closer to one another.

Joseph Omolayole, Dancers, 2023, textile sculpture, dimensions vary

Converging in a whirl around the lobby, Joseph Omolayole’s series, Dancers, are paired with energetic works on paper by Monic Morris. Although these two Creativity Explored artists work at different studios, the synergy between their work is undeniable. Morris’ dynamic drawings are created using the full range of motion of the artist’s reach, guided by feel rather than sight. This motion is mirrored by the Dancers which have kinetic joints, giving the artwork a new life with each installation. Together, the works interconnect to create a flow of colorful energy throughout the space tha welcomes visitors into each performance.

Dance is for everybody. I believe that the dance came from the people and that it should always be delivered back to the people.
— Alvin Ailey

For over four decades, Creativity Explored and ODC Theater have shared a Common Rhythm, creating spaces in the Mission District where everyone has the opportunity to express themselves freely. Common Rhythm serves as a celebration of the great strides that have been made for our community, and as inspiration for us to continue following that momentum forward.
