Toby Calonico
b. 1937 ∙ CE artist
While at Creativity Explored, Toby Calonico was an extremely prolific artist who was always creating new work. Calonico combined painting and collage in ways that may first seem abstract, but are in fact collections of very specific and consistent symbols. Each type of amorphous, cellular-looking shape represents an object or subject drawn from Calonico’s life. For example, his visual vocabulary includes shapes representing cornflakes, potatoes, specific animals, stars, and even babies.
