If you live in the Bay Area, are an adult with a developmental disability, and have an interest in art, you may apply to be a studio artist at Creativity Explored. Many of our artists experience additional disabilities such as mental illness, emotional disturbances, and/or physical disabilities. Artists joining our studios come from diverse backgrounds and have a wide range of experience and ability.
You must have the ability to purchase services, either through private means, or be eligible to receive funding through the California Regional Center System. If you live in San Francisco or San Mateo County, you should call the Golden Gate Regional Center (GGRC) for more information. If you live in the East Bay, you should call the Regional Center of the East Bay (RCEB).
Currently, we serve adults: our youngest artist just turned 20, and our oldest is 82. In order to be considered an adult by the Golden Gate Regional Center, you must have graduated from high school and/or no longer be eligible to receive school services. Generally speaking, you must be at least 18. There is no upper age limit.
You do not need to speak English to make art at Creativity Explored. Many of our artists come from around the world and their native language is not English. We have teachers who speak English, Spanish, German, French, and Thai. Many studio artists do not communicate using words, and we have found ways to understand each other and work together.
You do not need to be an experienced artist to make art at Creativity Explored! Most of our current studio artists had little or no experience making art before they came to work here. Some never had the opportunity, or did not think it was something they wanted to do. It’s fine if you have never made art before — as long as you think making art is something you are interested in doing.
We introduce our studio artists to different media and let them experiment. Different people learn in different ways; some jump in and start exploring media and techniques right away, while others take their time to really get involved. Generally, we’ll adapt our style to meet your style as an artist. Our goal is to create an environment where you’ll have fun and be comfortable making art. We’ll work with you to make that happen.
After you have been here for 30 days, we’ll meet with you, your social worker, and other people involved in your life to discuss how things are going. At that point, we can decide to continue services, extend the evaluation period, or discontinue services.
Most of our studio artists are referred to us by the Golden Gate Regional Center (GGRC), so you should first talk to the people at GGRC to see if you are eligible. If you live in the East Bay, you should talk to the Regional Center of the East Bay (RCEB). If you meet GGRC/RCEB eligibility requirements, you or your social worker should contact us to schedule a time for you to visit our studio. When you visit, we’ll talk to you and get an idea of your interests and needs. We’ll also ask you and your social worker to provide us with some assessment information so we can determine whether our services are a good match for your interests, and whether we can meet your needs.
If we both decide that it’s a good idea for you to come to Creativity Explored, we’ll help you make arrangements with your social worker for you to start attending. Together, we’ll determine a schedule that works for you and for us, and you can start making art here in as little as two weeks!
